  • Principles of the study (continued)

Level of Service Enhancements – The proposed smart transportation improvements would serve to optimize intersection function for all users, which would minimize travel delay for all users (all travel modes) while reducing idling time and wait times.

Emphasizes Safety – Safety enhancement, begun through the implementation of the previous projects, would be paramount in the smart transportation improvements, as described above. The benefits of safety improvements will serve both the surrounding residential community and the university community.

Emphasizes intermodal connections – The CMU campus area of Oakland is serviced by both public transit and CMU shuttle service. Improving bike/pedestrian mobility in the subject area will provide more opportunities for residents, students and university employees to access existing mass transit choices in the university and Oakland areas.

Leverages/preserves existing investments – The program of smart transportation improvements would provide the next logical step in overall transportation enhancements, as described above.
